What is the Reserve Force?

"It is universally acknowledged that in a democracy the Citizen in Uniform, the part-time soldier, is an indispensable element of a country's defence". - Joe Modise, Minister of Defence, 5 June 1996 (South African Defence Review 1998). Reserve Force service is military service rendered by citizens of the country on a voluntary basis. The members of the Reserve either serve within the structure of an allocated unit or in accordance with a professional and skills requirement programme. Under normal circumstances the period of service will vary according to an agreed contract between the Reserve Force member and the SANDF.
